Typhoon Hato 2017.08.23 – Macau was devastated, with help of everyone, we persevered

In the morning on August 23rd, 2017, Typhoon Hato, a severe typhoon with warning up to signal no. 10 had washed Macau with heavy flooding. It killed 10 lives, more than 240 people were injured, caused a lot of damages to our home.  Lowland areas were flooded, instead of buses or vehicles, it had turned into river. Cars were stuck with water level up to half of the car window.   The entire Macau was blacked out, except the properties with temporary back up electricity. Water plump was damaged, no power and no water. I live at the lowland area, right at the inner harbour, the lobby of the building that I am living at was flooded with water up to 1.5 m high within 30 minutes.  Finally, by late evening on the same day, the typhoon signal was lowered to no.3.

After the storm, lots of kind people and thoughtful people had made a big contribution to us and worth mentioning. Up till now, I would like to make a remark here:

Local police force, firefighters, medical workers, all government frontline worker
– Worked nonstop, and long hours in rescue Macau land and people

Brave Philippine Man
– He doesn’t know how to swim, but when the water flood flow in with fierce typhoon signal number 10. He went down to the flood to help. He and one another young chinese guy rescued an old couple to board onto the floating board.

Mr. Lawrence Ho, Chairman and CEO of Melco Resorts & Entertainment
– The first casino giant that personally donate MOP$30 million to the disaster relief fund set up by the Melco Resorts.
– He halted the construction of the Melco’s hotel Morpheus, and redirected the 2000 workers plus 500 of the melco crown volunteer team, to assist in the relief work of Macau,with including bottled water delivery, clear debris, and immediate assistance to general public.

– Free simple medical services offered

Dr. Hoi Dermatology medical centre
– Free simple medical services offered

Hui Xian medical centre
– Free simple medical services offered
– Free milk powder for the infant, offer room space for the new moms to pump breast milk, fridge breast milk, …etc.

Taxi drivers volunteer group
– Offered 3 days free rides with priorities for the volunteers, elders, general public who need immediate help

Uber Macau
– Re-opened service in Macau to offer 3 days free rides for general public

Volunteers outburst from the social network
– They are general public who are connected by the social network.
– Helped to do food and bottled water delivery.
– Cleared out a lot of garbage in the soaked, stink area as well.
– Went up and down stairs of different buildings, to delivery food and water, some
carry the elderly to move out of their home

Volunteers groups of different companies, different government departments
– Helped to do food and bottled water delivery.

CEM – Macau power supply company
–  there were major damages in their power supply parts
–  Their engineers and a lot of the employees had worked non-stop to help recover power supply as soon as possible

SAAM – Macau water supply company
– Likewise, there were major damages in their water supply parts
– Their engineers and a lot of the employees had worked non-stop to help recover water supply as soon as possible

CTM – Macau main telecom company
– Major damages in the telecom parts
– Had done a great effort to maintain the telecom connection in place, so we can
have internet to know the typhoon news when the TV is down, so we can call to
our families so we know we all are safe. there was only minimal time
disconnection on Aug 23rd

– offered free meal boxes

External help:

Hong Kong food and water drive to Macau
– some volunteers in Hong Kong have organised food & water drive to deliver the
goods in Macau

People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers
– 1000 soldiers with approved by central government of the request from our Macau government Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On for assistance
– They had swiftly done a great deal of works including removed the blocked tree trunks, the branches, piles and piles of the garbage in 3 days and 3 nights.

Now Macau is restored by roughly 90%.
